About

Aracus Ltd is owned and run by Andy Flanagan, an Architectural Technologist with 18 years’ experience in the trade and accredited as an Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. I work with a trusted network of third-party consultants for areas including Structural Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Design, Ecology and Topographical Surveying.

I can also recommend high-quality builders in and around Derbyshire, who I have worked with for years on several successful projects.

Andy Flanagan BSc(Hons) ACIAT

My background in architecture goes back to 2003, working as a Lead Technician from early in my career on industrial, commercial and residential schemes. I was mentored by a fantastic Manchester-based Architect, John Albutt, who taught me from day one the importance of design-for-construction and detailing. By focussing on the later stage design stages I managed to oversee several successful builds in the first few years of my career.

I worked my way up to a Senior Technologist role at a Sheffield practice, and was eventually given control over the RIBA Stage 3+ Design Team as the Technical Design Manager. This role saw me lead a team of Technicians and Technologists to deliver design packages for a number of successful projects within housing, education, healthcare and industrial works. As part of the teams I’ve worked with in my employment career, I have worked on projects with the following Clients:

  • The University of Sheffield
  • Kier
  • The University of Nottingham
  • Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
  • BMI Healthcare
  • Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Dupont
  • Sheffield Hallam University
  • Marks and Spencer
  • Audi

I have always believed that the experience of the Contractors I work with is an invaluable resource. All too often I heard about disputes between Architects and Builders, often due to a lack of communication or understanding of the project at hand. My approach has always been and will continue to be that of a working partnership. I’m a firm believer that we are all working towards the same goal, and I pride myself on my working relationship with the Contractors and Clients I’ve overseen projects with. I’m pleased to have had so many Clients and Contractors come back to me for follow-up projects. I see this as paramount to both my own goals and the success of the projects.

Since starting my own company, I have seen my portfolio grow at a very satisfying rate. I have taken the experience gained from my employment career and am now applying it to my own projects. Every project, be it a simple re-roofing job or a new build housing scheme is an opportunity to improve, and this I believe is reflected in the quality of service provided.

My ethos has always been to deliver what the Client wants. I’m not a fan of Architects leading the Client away from what they want. My experience in the trade allows me to offer sound guidance and consulting on planning, design, costing and construction, to see that each Client gets their building exactly as they pictured it in their head.

Away from architecture I am something of a nerd for all things astronomy. I spend (probably too much) time messing with telescopes and cameras in an effort to photograph the night sky. It’s a technical nightmare of a hobby sometimes, but when it all comes together it’s truly breath-taking.
